Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate whether skin stimulation with microcone before exercise affects runners’ conditions.

Methods: At the Tokyo Marathon EXPO in 2017, runners interested in receiving microcone care agreed to participate in the study. The participants were given skin stimulation using a microcone before and after the marathon, then completed a questionnaire after the competition. Questions addressed sex, age, best time of the marathon, disability site (up to three), and changes perceived after the race. A space was also provided for free description.

Results: Eighty individuals (63 males, 17 females) completed the questionnaire. The mean age of the study participants was 45.9 ± 9.3 (mean ± standard deviation). The mean best time was 250.5 ± 55.4 minutes. Disability sites included foot and lower leg (43 people), knee (33), waist (14), thigh (10), buttock (5), back (2), shoulder (1), and other (1). After the race, 21 people reported no pain at all, 54 reported reduced pain, four reported no change, and one did not answer.

Discussion/Conclusions: In this study, we surveyed runners from the general population. Most of them complained of pain in the lower body, but 26% did not feel pain while running. In the free description section of the questionnaire, many runners reported no pain, even though they had always experienced pain in previous marathons. A double-blind test is needed to further examine the effects of skin stimulation with microcone before exercise.
