Treatment of pain using modernized Acupuncture

INTRODUCTION


Pain is a common sensation found in everyday life. Pain is an instinctive reaction to inform the body of an incoming threat, so this reaction is to protect us.

The feeling of pain varies from person to person, due to the difference in the tolerance threshold of each person to pain.

An overview of pain

Pain occurs a tissue is stimulated. Pain usually consists of two parts, one is the feeling of pain and the other is the body's response to pain. Accompanied by a strong emotional response, it creates reaction to the affected organs.

The concept, type and nature of pain

The concept of pain is a very complex. Pain is one of the most common clinical symptoms. Pain has 2 important meanings for the human body. Persistent pain or severe pain causes suffering to the patient and requires treatment. However, pain on the human body also has a favorable side; the pain is often a sign of disease.

The classification of pain, generally have the following classification

(1)  According to the nature of pain and duration, it can be divided into acute pain and chronic pain

(2)  According to the location of the pain, it can be divided into superficial pain and deep pain by depth. Deep pain can be divided into physical pain and visceral pain. On the anatomical site can be divided into headache, neck pain, chest pain, abdominal pain, low back pain, limb pain and joint pain.

(3)  According to the cause of pain, it can be divided into primary pain (unexplained pain), secondary pain (symptomatic pain) and traumatic pain.

(4)  According to the nature of pain, it can be divided into organic pain and psychogenic pain. Can also be divided into neurogenic pain and myogenic pain.

(5)  According to the patient’s description, it can be divided into sharp pain, dull pain, twisting pain, colic, soreness, jumping pain, persistent pain, intermittent pain.

The relationship between pain and nerves

Responsible to transmit pain to the brain is the nerve. Human nerves are roughly divided into the brain and central nervous system around the vertebra, sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous system, as well as the peripheral nervous system.



Acupuncture pain therapy

Acupuncture points can stimulate Qi, condition Qi Xue, regulate the function of organs and restore the balance of Yin and Yang.

Acupuncture and moxibustion treatment of common pain

I.Headache

Headache is a symptom of the patient. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for shallow pain and near the head is called "headache", deep and distant pain called “wind head pain." Exogenous causes, emotion, internal injuries and trauma can cause chaos to Qi Xue, block the meridian affecting the brain and causing headache.

A. Syndrome Differentiation:

Cold wind headache, Wind-heat headache, Damp wind headache, Yang Liver  headache,

Phlegm headache, Qixue deficiency, Insufficient Qi kidney, Stagnation of blood.

B. Principles of treatment

Drain the meridians and blood circulation to remove pain.

C. Treatment

(1) Body Acupuncture Therapy

Acupoints: Taiyang, Baihui, Touwei, Quchi, Yintang, Hegu, Zusanli, Taichong

(2) Ear acupuncture therapy

    Acupoints: Choose according to the corresponding area of pain (forehead, top, occipital), Shenmen, Subcortex


II.Cervical pain (pain at the neck)

Chinese medicine believes that old age, lack of liver’s yang, weak body, bones and ligament dystrophy as internal causes. Exogenous cold, wet, heat, or injury are external causes. Interaction between the two Taiyang meridian’s qi to be not smooth, abnormal blood and qi’s circulation, or old disease causes qi stagnation, meridians blocked and pain.

A.Syndrome Differentiation

Cold Wind Blockage , Injury and stasis , Deficiency of Liver and Kidney

B.Principles of treatment

Strengthen liver and kidney, smoothen blood circulation

 C. Treatment 

(1) Body acupuncture therapy

            Acupoints:Huatuo jiaji, Dazhui (GV 14),Jianjing (GB21),Waiguan (TE5),Wangu (SI 4)

    (2)Ear Acupuncture point

Acupoints:Cervical point, shenmen, subcortex, Liver, Kidney


III.Inflammation of Shoulder

Shoulder around the inflammation referred to as peri-arthritis, also known as shoulder coagulation (frozen shoulder), due to occur in the 50-year-old middle-aged, and "fifty shoulders,". The clinical features of frozen shoulder are limitations of pain and shoulder movement. Pain performance for the dull pain, soreness, deep parts, sometimes press the time to reduce the night pain increased. Shoulder joint activity is limited: the patient upper extremity abduction, the move and the outer rotation is limited.

A.Syndrome Differentiation

Stagnation muscle paralysis,Blood stasis Tendon junctioBlood deficiency tendons thin.

B.Principles of treatment

Early and medium term lauch qi Meridian remove pain. The latter nourishes the blood of the tendon.

C. Treatment 

       (1) Body acupuncture therapy

     Acupoint : Ah She point, Jianliao (TE 14), Jianyu (Li 15), Taijian (Extra point), Tiaokou (ST 38) through Chengshan ( BL 57)

       (2) Ear Acupuncture point

Acupoint : shoulder, clavicle,Shenmen, Subcortex, kidney


IV.Low back pain

Low back pain refers to the waist and leg pain as the main symptoms of the disease, the

pain can be expressed in the waist or side of the side or bilateral. 

Chinese medicine called the disease "Bi Syndrome" "low back pain" and so on. Can be due to Deficiency  Qi , wind cold wet exogenous, dodge strain and other causes, blocking the meridian.

A.Syndrome Differentiation

Cold dampness blocking resistance, Stagnation Qi and blood, Xu Liver and kidney

B.Principles of treatment

Warm Meridian & blood circulation Relieve pain  

Treatment to take Meridian foot Taiyang , Du  based on the main points

C.   Treatment 

       (1) Body acupuncture therapy

Acupoint : waist Jiaji points, Shenshu (BL23), Yanglingquan (GB34), Chengshan (BL 57), Jiegu/Xuanzhong (GB39) , Kunlun (BL60), Ahshe.

(2)Ear acupuncture

Acupoint : lumbar spine, sacral, kidney, Shenmen.


Conclusion

Successful application of acupuncture treatment of pain is clearly dependent on the patient's clear pain positioning. Before treatment should be a detailed understanding of the nature and location of pain. And to find the most sensitive parts of the pain, oppression sensitive areas to increase or reduce pain on the treatment of great significance.
