The 19th Batch Zambia-Aiding Chinese Medical Team Accomplished Their Task

On the afternoon of July 26, reporter were informed at the news conference of 19th Batch Zambia-aiding Chinese Medical Team: “It’s the 40th anniversary of China medical team aiding Zambia. The 19th Batch Zambia-Aiding Chinese Medical Team went to Zambia on May 15th, 2017, stayed for 13 months and came back at the night of June 14th, 2018. The team perfectly fulfilled the tasks holding the spirits that “willing to sacrifice, rescue the wounded and love all beings”. They were awarded by the ministry of health of Zambia the certificate of honour and the China-Zambia medical cooperation medal, and were affectionately called “medical envoy” by the local people.

Deputy director of Health and Family Planning Commission of Nanyang li Changde said that the Chinese government has sent out 517 people of 19 medical teams to Zambia in the past 40 years since the first time that in January 1978, organised by Henan province and in line with China’s foreign countries aiding plan. In 2017, Nanyang participated as a member unit in the team member elections of Ethiopia-aiding, Eritrea-aiding and Zambia-aiding, which is the greatest Africa aiding team in Nanyang’s history. 

The 19th batch Zambia-aiding Chinese medical team offered the medical service selflessly and gratuitously. Over the past year, they helped the local people with their health warmly, and helped improve Zambia’s medical level. A total of 15319 outpatients were treated, 22780 were diagnosed, 3892 were treated with surgery and anaesthesia, 418 critical patients were given emergency treatments, and 1050 were given acupuncture therapy. The medical team brought Zambia high level clinical skills and TCM treatments like acupuncture and massage therapy, which successfully cured  many patients. They participated in public health activities such as emergency medical actions assisting Chinese people in Zambia, and free medical treatment. Moreover, they were active in local epidemic prevention and control. This team did the best in volunteering among all teams in the past.

At the end of 2017, a severe outbreak of cholera in Lusaka, Zambia, endangered the health and safety of the mess workers in Zambia and the Chinese overseas community. They cooperated with the ministry of health to prevent and control the epidemic and put forward the Chinese strategies for preventing and controlling epidemic. Furthermore, they strengthen external publicity and communication. And while the 40th anniversary of the founding of the medical team, the 19th team members take the initiative to visit the old members. Meanwhile, in order to steadily push forward the work, branch members formulated the assistant principles, emphasised on the leadership of the embassy, strengthen the connection with health sector of Zambia government and hospitals on foreign affairs, and improving the communication and connection with Chinese-funded units.

Former Chinese ambassador in Zambia Yang Youming commented the team as “a banner of Chinese-funded institutions in Zambia” just because all the team members united as one, high-skilled, professional and adhering to the spirit of foreign aid medical team. On account of the backward medical level and lack of medical facilities in Zambia, the team members carried out overall more than 30 new technologies, programs and businesses in a year by using their professional expertise. Their team is the one that had most new programs and businesses in number.

Deputy researcher of Nanyang health and family planning commission, leader of Zambia-aiding team Qi Zuhong and team representative Zhao Yong indicated that they faced a lot of difficulties in the past year. The team members had to take care of themselves. There were pressures in their daily life, work, going out, and psychological problems, not only because the short of materials in Zambia, but also because there are some infectious diseases like AIDS in Zambia. Although some difficulties were just trifles, it still make them difficult to move even an inch. But they firmly believe in the strength of a solid unity. They always try their best to solve problems on their own. Although they are under a lot of mental pressure at work, when they think of rescuing more people, they will always stick to their duty as doctors that saving lives and injuries.

By virtue of its professionalism, dedication, fearlessness and selflessness in medical care, the 19th batch of Zambia-aiding Chinese medical team was not only highly appreciated by the Chinese Embassy in Zambia, but also highly values by the Zambian government and Zambia's ministry of health. In 2017, the medical team was awarded the "most beautiful doctor" group prize by the health and family planning commission of Nanyang city. In 2018, the team won the title of "people who touched Nanyang".

It is reported that China's 19th medical aid team in Zambia was appointed by Henan provincial health and family planning commission, and led by Nanyang of health and family planning commission. 28 team members are separately from 8 units including Nanyang of health and family planning commission, Nanyang medical college, Nanyang central hospital, Nanyang Chinese medicine hospital, the first affiliated hospital of Nanyang medical college, the city’s first people's hospital, second people's hospital, Nanshi hospital, and covered of cardiology, internal medicine, Chinese medicine acupuncture and moxibustion, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, maxillofacial surgery, otorhinolaryngological, Gynecology & Pediatrics, anaesthesia and medical professional departments. The youngest one is 34, and the oldest one is 53. The 28 members were assigned to work in four hospitals, namely, Zambia university teaching hospital (UTH), Levi Mwanawasa university teaching hospital (Levi hospital), Ndola teaching hospital and Livingston central hospital.
