From September 1 to 4, 2026, the Advanced Training Program on the Application and Implementation of WFAS Acupuncture-Moxibustion Standards and the High-Quality Development of Acupuncture-Moxibustion was held in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China. The program was sponsored by the Department of Human Resources and Social Security of Henan Province, organized by Henan University of Chinese Medicine, and provided with technical guidance by the Standardization Working Committee of the World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies (WFAS). Prof. Liu Baoyan, Academic Committee Member of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (CACMS) and President of WFAS, and Prof. Zhao Hong, Executive President of Luohu Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Shenzhen and Director of the Standardization Working Committee of WFAS, attended the program. A total of 55 key acupuncture-moxibustion professionals from medical and health institutions, universities and research institutes across China participated in the training.

The program was one of the 2026 national-level advanced training programs under the Knowledge Renewal Project for Professional and Technical Personnel of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. With the theme “Promoting the Application and Implementation of International Acupuncture-Moxibustion Standards and Advancing the High-Quality Development of Acupuncture-Moxibustion,” the program covered the development and implementation of WFAS international standards on acupuncture-moxibustion, theories and advances in the high-quality development of acupuncture-moxibustion, and specialized clinical techniques, including the WFAS international standard Technical Benchmark of Acupuncture and Moxibustion—Toujiu.

The program combined thematic lectures, focused discussions, clinical practice and case analysis. Liu Baoyan delivered a lecture entitled “Review and Prospects of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Standardization.” Zhao Hong presented “Clinical Practice Guideline for Acupuncture Treatment of Low Back Pain and Key Technical Procedures.” Zhao Jiping of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine explained the recommendations and protocols in the WFAS Clinical Guideline on Acupuncture and Moxibustion—Allergic Rhinitis. Wang Jingjing of the Institute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion and the Acupuncture and Moxibustion Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences shared experience in implementing the WFAS Clinical Guideline on Acupuncture and Moxibustion—Migraine in primary healthcare settings. Hai Ying of the First Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine introduced Standardized Manipulations of Acupuncture and Moxibustion—Part 15: Ophthalmic Acupuncture Techniques. Wang Chao, Vice Secretary-General of the Standardization Working Committee of WFAS, gave an overview of the development of WFAS international standards on acupuncture-moxibustion. Hu Bin, Dean of the School of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina at Henan University of Chinese Medicine, lectured on the clinical practice guideline for acupuncture treatment of insomnia and its application. Gao Xiyan, academic leader in acupuncture-moxibustion at Henan University of Chinese Medicine, presented on the theory of moxibustion dosage, sensation and effect in Toujiu and specifications for its clinical application.

Centering on WFAS international standards on acupuncture-moxibustion and incorporating relevant Chinese national standards, the lecturers closely addressed the practical needs of frontline clinicians and provided integrated professional guidance combining theoretical instruction with hands-on practice. The training was well received by the participants.

After four intensive and substantive days of study, all participants successfully completed the required courses. With its focus on both emerging developments and practical application, the program provided valuable guidance for strengthening the application of international acupuncture-moxibustion standards and improving clinical diagnosis and treatment. It was designed to cultivate a cohort of key acupuncture-moxibustion professionals with a sound understanding of international standards, strong clinical skills and an understanding of standards development, thereby providing a strong talent foundation for the high-quality development of acupuncture-moxibustion.
